Large-scale historical afforestation failure with Pinus cembra in the Swiss Prealps

چکیده

Abstract Between the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, large-scale afforestation projects were undertaken in Swiss Prealps. The stone pine ( Pinus cembra L.), an emblematic alpine tree with important economic potential, conservation value ecological relevance, was one of species used these efforts. We investigated distribution site characteristics all known natural populations planted stands canton Fribourg (Switzerland). 1885 1952, artificial carried out mountainous regions Fribourg. Nearly 450,000 seedlings P. planted. One century later, only approximately 650 trees survived (0.15% trees). Moreover, no regeneration can be observed afforested stands. Since harvest activities stands, whole campaign described as a failure. Possible causes are discussed. In this region, occurs naturally particular microrefugia markedly rough topography. argue that lack knowledge or consideration ecology at local scale factor leading to actual context anticipating mitigating negative effects global warming, our study highlights importance precise understanding regional conditions.

THE OPTIMIZATION OF LARGE-SCALE DOME TRUSSES ON THE BASIS OF THE PROBABILITY OF FAILURE

Metaheuristic algorithms are preferred by the many researchers to reach the reliability based design optimization (RBDO) of truss structures. The cross-sectional area of the elements of a truss is considered as design variables for the size optimization under frequency constraints. The design of dome truss structures are optimized based on reliability by a popular metaheuristic optimization tec...

Effects of Climate and Land-Use Change on the Establishment and Growth of Cembran Pine (Pinus cembra L.) over the Altitudinal Treeline Ecotone in the Central Swiss Alps

Tree growth is generally limited by temperature in cold climates and by water availability in arid zones. Establishment in altitudinal treeline ecotones depends on the temperature, but may be very sensitive to water availability as well. We studied the effect of climate and land use on the colonization and growth of Pinus cembra in the treeline ecotone of the dry Central Swiss Alps: one site wa...

Carbon dioxide gas exchange of cembran pine (Pinus cembra) at the alpine timberline during winter.

Winter CO(2) gas exchange of the last three flushes of cembran pine (Pinus cembra L.) was studied under ambient conditions at the alpine timberline, an ecotone with strong seasonal changes in climate. During the coldest months of the year, December to March, gas exchange was almost completely suppressed and even the highest irradiances and temperatures did not cause a significant increase in ne...

Shamela: A Large-Scale Historical Arabic Corpus

Arabic is a widely-spoken language with a rich and long history spanning more than fourteen centuries. Yet existing Arabic corpora largely focus on the modern period or lack sufficient diachronic information. We develop a large-scale, historical corpus of Arabic of about 1 billion words from diverse periods of time. We clean this corpus, process it with a morphological analyzer, and enhance it ...
